Our work locally...

During May and June we have helped residents with a range of issues. We have represented residents over planning issues relating to the new Banister School, dealt with parking issues in Grove Rd, Queenstown Rd and Randolph St, housing issues in Paynes Road and Millbrook Road East, litter in Park Rd, and fly tipping in Shirley Rd. We have been progressing plans to transform the Civil Service Sports Ground for community and school use, helped out with the Freemantle Triangle litter pick, represented residents’ views about possible parking changes in Foundry Lane and Hardy Close, kept people up to date with planning issues in Clifton Rd and have been at the Helius powerstation consultation events to make sure that residents’ are heard.

Last night the Mayor of Southampton, Terry Matthews, hosted an event in the Mayor's Parlour at the Civic Centre to say thank you to everyone who has been involved in the 10 year campaign to save the Civil Service Sports Ground. It was great to bring together local residents, local headteachers, school governors and councillors to formally recognise all the work that has been put in over the years and a chance to plan for the future for this fantastic open space in the middle of Freemantle Ward.

Local councillor Brian Parnell was re-elected last night.

It was a close fought campaign in Freemantle with a higher turn out than ususal with the Alternative Vote refurendum on the same day.

Brian's re-election will mean that this new municipal year will be Brian's 25th year on Southampton City Council and his 21st for Freemantle Ward.

Well Done For a Year of Hard Work!

Wednesday was the annual Mayor Making ceremony in the Guildhall and I had the chance to formally and publicly thank my fellow Freemantle Ward Councillor Brian Parnell for the great job that he has done over the past year as Mayor. Brian carried out over 600 civic duties with his typical enthusiasm and good humour. His wife Mary was a great support throughout the year and showed great fortitude, being at Brian's side for most of his engagements.

As Mayor Brian had a varied year, opening new businesses in the city ranging from a milkshake parlour in WestQuay to the new £79m IKEA store. He supported all the city's excellent voluntary and community groups and his official charities were Dreamwall and Street Pastors.

The height of the Mayoral year though was surely being the city's representative at the Olympic sailing events in Quingdao, Southampton's sister city in China.

I am delighted that Freemantle residents have re-elected Brian as their councillor for another 4 years. Brian fought a very clean campaign and worked extremely hard.

It is disappointing that despite efforts by the council (at considerable public expense - including the chartering of a light aircraft and election buses) turn out fell again. I suspect that this is largely as a result of Labour voters chosing to stay at home in protest.

Freemantle's Choice: Brian Parnell

The election campaign for Southampton City council elections on 3rd of May is now well underway.

This will be an important election for the city as it will hopefully break the political deadlock that has existed since last May when all 3 parties stood on 16 Councillors each.

Here is a list of candidates for Freemantle Ward:

Councillor Brian Parnell - Conservative

Harry Mitchell - Labour

Darren Pickering - Green

Juliet Williams - Lib Dem

Brian Parnell is a well known figure in Freemantle, having served as a ward councillor for 16 years. Brian was first elected in 1979 and also served as a ward councillor for Shirley for 4 years.

Brian is chairman of the Freemantle Community Centre user group and is the Conservative's Children's Services Spokesman. He also serves on the city's adoption panel.

Since being re-elected to the council for Freemantle in 2002, Brian has worked tremendously hard and got a lot done. Some of his key achievements:

- Fought successfully to secure over £1m of investment into the Freemantle Community Centre which will be modernised and used in part for adults with learning disabilities.

- Worked with Shirley Pool and other parties and backed a lottery bid to improve the whole area around the community centre.

- Campaigned to save the Freemantle Civil Service Ground from development by its owners Bovis Homes.

- Secured council funds so that the land can be purchased for use by the local community and St Marks and Regents Park schools.

- Secured council commitment to bid for about £25m of Government money for a new school on the St Marks site.

- Campaigned against the loss of family housing in the ward and inappropriate developments.

- Fought for local residents who want parking schemes introduced in their roads.

- Stopped Labour cuts of £333,000 to vital children's social services which would have seen the loss of family centres in the city.

- Campaigned to keep council tax down and to introduce a 10% reduction in council tax for pensioner households.

- Campaigned for free pensioner travel across all of Hampshire.

In addition Brian has dealt with hundreds of indvidual problems for local residents on a whole range of matters, such as parking, housing issues, crime, planning etc.

In 2002 Brian also served as the Mayor of the City. In addition to representing Southampton with dignity he raised lots of money for his mayoral charity Rose Road.

I very much hope that Brian will be re-elected to continue the good work he does for the area.
