• Conservatives gained a seat in Portswood, Millbrook and Swaythling but lost a seat in Shirley.
• Liberal Democrats lost two seats - Portswood and Swaythling
• Labour lost a seat in Millbrook and gained a seat in Shirley.

• Labour: 28
• Conservative: 18

New Allotments for Brickfield Road

I am delighted at the decision by the city council to protect the unused land at the corner of Brickfield Road, in Portswood from development.

A decision was taken back in 2006 by the Lib Dem council Administration at the time to sell the land for housing and when this came to light last year there was strong opposition, led by the local community group (NBSP).

In particular I would like to thank Raf Persaud for his tireless campaigning on behalf of the community.

Portswood Councillor Vincenzo Capozzoli and I have been working for the past 12 months to keep the site green and to protect the land for the local community.

Following the public meeting of local residents last year we have been working hard behind the scenes to reach an agreement with the University that will see the site converted to allotments. Using the site for allotments was a suggestion put forward at the residents meeting last year and I am pleased that the council has listened to local people and found a way to achieve this.

The One Big Community Festival

A free community festival is being held at Portswood Recreation Ground on Saturday 11th September. The festival has been arranged by local residents and includes live performances and interactive workshops.

Local Conservative Councillors will be there during the day holding a surgery to help with local issues and problems.

Shirley Bus Route Restored

A popular bus route was brought back earlier this month. The new 7A route serves Bassett, Portswood, Shirley, Swaythling, the University and the General Hospital.

There was public outcry at the loss of the number 6 bus and the City Council has acted quickly to fund the replacement route which is run by First Bus. This is great news for local people.

Backing Bingo

I recently spent an afternoon at the Mecca Bingo in Portswood. I met members of staff and bingo players and had a go at calling out the numbers.

Bingo halls up and down the country have been closing, with the industry under huge pressure from double taxation and the effects of the smoking ban. Unlike other forms of gambling bingo suffers from an anomaly in the tax system whereby it must pay both gaming duty and VAT. Conservatives have pledged to abolish this double taxation and save bingo halls up and down the country from closure.

The Mecca Bingo Hall on Portswood Broadway is a fantastic old building. I found an interesting article on Portswood.info which tells its history.

It was be a disaster for local people if it were to close. With over 34,000 members in Southampton (including me!) it would have big detrimental impact on the community.

Southampton Conservatives Field Youngest Candidate

Conservative Candidate: Vincenzo Capozzoli

Southampton Conservatives are taking advantage of new election laws that now allow candidates to stand for election from the age of 18. At previous elections the minimum age was 21.

Conservative Vincenzo Capozzoli, standing in Portswood, is aged only 20 and is the youngest candidate in Hampshire to be contesting a local government seat.

Vince, a third-year history and politics student and at Southampton University, said he has fallen in love with the city which he wants to make his home.

"The youth voice hasn't had much expression around here and I want it to be heard," he said.

He said he particularly wanted to smooth out some recent tensions between students and residents.
